Led by composer, trombonist, and concert producer Chris McIntyre, TILT Brass is a Brooklyn-based organization dedicated to creating new content and contexts for contemporary brass music by producing inventive concert programs, recording projects, and commissioning initiatives. TILT boldly positions itself as the vanguard presenter and advocate for new brass music in New York City. Founded in 2003 by McIntyre and Gregory Evans, TILT Brass’ various projects present the work of living composers with over 50 premiere performances thus far. Its personnel includes many of the brightest stars from the local brass community in ensemble configurations ranging from solo and chamber groups to experimental brass orchestra. TILT can be heard on releases by the Tzadik, New World, Non-Site, and POTTR labels.
In its quest to expose the broadest range of material, TILT Brass approaches instrumentation in two distinctive ways. First, by organizing two resident ensembles that focus on generating new works, TILT Creative Brass Band (TCBB) and TILT SIXtet. Second, with presentations for various forces: its Chamber Music Show programs, recital events such as McIntyre’s Meta Trombone project, site-specific massed brass events (SWELTER, surrounding The Lake at Central Park), and specific project collaborations with composers (John King, David Behrman, Chris Jonas).
TILT projects have been presented in a number of vital New York venues including the Whitney Museum (Christian Marclay: Festival), ISSUE Project Room, Roulette, Joe’s Pub, Cornelia Street Cafe, University Settlement, and The Stone. In December 2011, TILT Brass was a featured ensemble during the final performances of the Merce Cunningham Dance Co. at Park Avenue Armory, giving world premiere of works by King and Behrman.
TILT Brass’ repertoire includes works by contemporary masters such as James Tenney, Anthony Coleman, Lois V. Vierk, Heiner Goebbels, John Adams, Nick Didkovsky, Richard Barrett, and King, mid-career peers like Jonas and Taylor Ho Bynum, and composing ensemble members McIntyre, Norton, Wooley, and Curtis Hasselbring. TILT Brass’ first full-length recording was released in April 2011. To TILT: Volume 1, the first in a series presenting commissioned works, features the Creative Brass Band.
